MR. C STEVEN BAILEY: There are many causes of acute red eye, and conjunctivitis is the most common. Conjunctivitis usually settles down very quickly with antibiotic drops and ointment. But if it doesn’t start to settle down within a day or so, you really should seek specialist advice because other conditions are often mistaken for conjunctivitis.
