MR. C STEVEN BAILEY: Keratoconus is a progressive distortion of the front of the eye, the cornea. And it usually starts in late childhood and progresses over a period of about 20 or 30 years and then tends to stabilize in somebody’s 40s. The traditional methods of handling it, first with glasses and then with contact lenses and for the few people who can’t be fitted with contact lenses or can’t see well with them, then they may have to have corneal grafts. We provide contact lens corrections, wide variety, including hard lenses, the new synergize, hybrid lenses and all sorts of others to manage keratoconus. But one of the key things that has come out recently is to halt the progress of the condition and stabilize the corneal shape. And the only method that there is to do that is with corneal collagen cross linking with riboflavin, C3-R. Now this is a straight forward extremely safe and painless procedure. It takes about an hour and a half, but it will stop the corneal shape from progressing.
